Creative Chaos: A Studio Story

A few weeks ago, I gave my studio a refresh. If you’ve been following my creative journey, you might’ve noticed that my practice has expanded—what once was a bead-filled space now overflows with collage papers, inks, paints, books, and journals. I imagined that revamping my studio would lead to less clutter and more clarity. But truthfully? The chaos remains.
Not disorganization, exactly—most things have a home. But when inspiration strikes, cleaning takes a back seat. I move in a flurry of color and texture, reaching for materials mid-thought, letting the work lead.
As I looked back through some of my older blog posts, I realized I’ve always wrestled with the idea of a tidy studio. But maybe that’s just not how I work. Right now, I’m in the thick of a clay project, and my art table is completely covered. Once it’s done, I’ll put things back in their place. Until then… creative chaos reigns.
If you struggle with clutter or beat yourself up because your workspace isn’t “perfect,” I hope you’ll give yourself grace. If you’re creating—if the ideas are flowing and your hands are busy—then maybe a bit of mess is a sign that something magical is happening.
Of course, if the clutter starts to block your creativity, take a pause and clear the space. We all work differently. Some of us need order. Others find inspiration in the swirl of it all.
Wherever you fall, I hope you make room—for your materials, your mess, and your art.
